Not as productive but productive enough I had grand plans for today but they didn't turn out as grandly as I wanted. Even so, it was a better than average Sunday. The big task was finding a proper hibiscus bush. It too three visits to nurseries but I found one that I liked. Not a huge one but they grow well and quickly here in So Cal. An orange bloom which should go well with the remaining white plumeria. It is in the ground now and all I need is some additional topsoil to fill in the low places. Another flower bed got a dose of Roundup. I'll clear out the weeds and get them out so I can dig the trench for another sprinkler run. There are wild strawberries in there now and it is just a tangled mat. Mandevilla may eventually go in there. That just leaves one remaining more or less ground level flower bed. I'm debating ground roses vs. some more hibiscus. The hibiscus would grow much taller and help screen the door of a tool shed. Yeah, that's the ticket . . . There are three trim pieces for some interior lights that have become pitted and corroded. I plan to scrub one with an abrasive cloth like you'd use in a kitchen to scrub pots. If I can get the biggest pits put then I'll try painting it an off-white so that it will match the ceiling when it gets painted. Busy day tomorrow. Client visits and a major bank run. And the bill from hell. And maybe the painting as well tomorrow night. Nothing exciting at all. But I must begin to prepare for the Lambda Chi Alpha convention in Phoenix. From Big Bangs to Little Pops... My 4th of July holiday weekend started out great. On Thursday night, BF and I went to Kimos for a tranny fashion show. The party was "Tiara Sensation" and it was ridiculous in a good way. I got so freaking wasted (see pic). They had little craft tables set up for making fashion...things like stickers, scissors and construction paper. It was here that I met up with my good friend Kirsten. Kirsten on Van Ness Ave. Eventually, we couldn't take the craziness at Kimos anymore so we went a few doors over to the Cinch. A couple drinks there then it was back to my house for an impromptu after hours and I swear I fell asleep before my head hit the pillow. I was early rising on 4th sans hangover and ready to get into more trouble. We finally got out of the house around 2pm and headed over to Seans. We started getting the party started then, hell it was the 4th. We had to go to Nordstroms to drop off a house key and I already had a buzz going...that wasn't so much fun. I have never been a fan of going to the mall less than sober. Too many little kids around. I like to party with the big boys! LOL. After running the errand, we went to a new bar...well, new to me...I had never been there before. It's a place called "DECO". Let me tell you, it was only 4pm but this place is actually pretty cool! It has 3 rooms, a pool table and a smoking patio (not that this matters to me since I still don't smoke). Sean and I played a game of pool and I won because he sunk the 8 ball in the wrong pocket...nice! It turned out that I had hooked up with the bartender years ago...funny, this city is so small. So everytime I would look at him, I would have flashbacks. We didn't stay there too long after that. It was off to the Mix next. Another drink and then off to another bar, the Edge. This place was nasty! It was full of 30+ men and smelled like not only B.O. but also piss...and everyone was standing around in the funk as though it smelled completely normal! We couldn't drink our drinks fast enough. Then, it was off to the cafe for some..hahaha...dancing...it was still light out. There was no one dancing. Another drink and then we went all the way down to the Embarcadero to meet up with some of Sean's fuck friends. Sean is 21 and I seriously forgot how much energy I had when I was 21...still it's nice to hang out w/ him because it kinda made me feel younger. We were walking to the Crab Shack when BF and I realized that it was 7pm and we were nearing the time for an outfit change and a face wash. So, we did a group hug and then BF and I headed back to our place to freshen up for the evening. And here's where the evening turns sour. Sean @ the Embarcadero I had been calling Kirsten all day to see when we were going to meet up. The 4th of July was Kirsten's 30th birthday. We finally got in touch w/ him around 7:30PM and he told us to come over to where he was staying (Fort Mason) at 9:30PM. With the fireworks traffic (it was colored fog again this year), we didn't get there until about 10pm. They were obviously on illicit drugs and we were really just not on the same level. Kirsten was a bitch, we were ready to get back to the Castro to meet back up with Sean. Words were exchanged with the final sentence from Kirsten was along the lines of, "Maybe you should just leave then." And off we went...back to the Cafe in the Castro. We met up with Sean again and by this time, we realized were were just stupid drunk. So, we put ourselves on time out on the smoking patio and at 12AM, I said to BF, "You wanna go?" He shook his head so we vacated the premises. We managed to get a cab pretty quickly and were home pretty quickly too. It was an event-filled day and definitely one of the better 4th of July's I've had. I awakened yesterday morning to the sound of Kirsten's voicemail where he called me a "Tall Cow"...anyone know what this means? And a text that was both bitchy and unnecessary. Here it is... "We are in charge of what we create and carry with us...And that's integrity, integrity to uplift those around you and responsibility to own your choices. I hope you choose to own your enjoyment or lack there of, as it's up to you what you give not what you get!" I texted back with (and taking into consideration the voicemail)... "Whatever. Call me names if you wish. I tried to be a part of your day and you told me to leave. It was a complete waste of my time going to D's because if I would have known that you were going to be a bitch, I wouldn't have even came over. I called you more than once after we left D's and you ignored those calls so we left the Castro (truth). You can get your friends to convince you that you are the victim and I'm so evil or whatever but please take a look in the mirror this morning and ask yourself if you are really so innocent." Ok, so reading both of these texts, I realize that they are both very weakly formed arguments and I'm not really sure what the issue between Kirsten and I is exactly...but he never called me yesterday and I didn't call him and it really hurts me because he is one of my oldest/closest friends and since he lives 1000 miles away in Michigan, it kinda sux that we aren't hanging out while he is visiting. I think what is probably happening is that he is doing K or coke or some other hard drugs and he knows that I don't do that stuff these days and is shutting me out because he is choosing the drugs over me. This is the most logical explanation for our disconnection and/or that D is perpetuating it...D is not a fan of BF or I. So, whatever, that't the whole story and I'm not calling Kirsten again. If he wants to hang out with me again while he is here, he will have to reach out first. Well, it is Sunday now. I have had it with all the partying and plan to have a nice sober relaxing day to prepare for work tomorrow. I can't believe it's July. I'll be in Hawaii next month after my 29th birthday! Then the Janet Jackson concert, the Madonna concert, a new President elect, Jayme's Thanksgiving visit, and then it will be 2009! This year is just flying by...I can't believe it. Ok, time for yoga...I hope you all had a great holiday weekend! So Freaking Wasted <3 Frank Paul :) Current Mood: drainedCurrent Music: Madonna "Mergirl" |

Discoveries while clearing out the bar While watching The Producers I decided to clean out the bar. It is a large bar for home use with a fridge and sink with four full sized bar stools on the other side. I discovered several items . . . Wine that I brought with me from Virginia. All whites, all likely corked. A travel bar set that I gave to mom and dad probably 15 years ago. And it was STILL stocked with a bottle each or Bombay Sapphire and Stoli. And the crowning discovery: An old Christmas gift of mine: A gift set containing two snifters and a bottle of Courvoisier!I'm not a fan of cognac but I'll make an exception! The I tried to open the bottle. It had been down so long that the cork stopper disintegrated! I got 1/2 of the stopper out but the remaining portion remained in the bottle. I dug out the stuck half but now I can't get the bottle closed. FUCK Oh well, it beats milk and cookies while watching TV! Current Mood: surprisedCurrent Music: Mel Brooks - 'Til Him |

Productive day, sort of Today was marked by throwing stuff out. Junk from closets, old paperwork, and a tree stump. Oh yes, the stump... Mom and dad loved Hawaii and planted some plumeria in the back yard. Pretty when of modest size, they can be a real unruly pain in the ass when they grow up. One had to go as it had become too big and floppy. Unfortunately they can be tough to remove as they have scraggly roots that go everywhere. Including under the footing of a nearby (within a foot) block wall fence. It took a garden saw, a bow saw, a circular saw (don't ask) a couple of chisels and a garden spade to get the damn thing out. Tomorrow a dwarf lime tree will go in, possibly an espalier version thereof. Plus a couple of bags of fresh topsoil. I'll also scope out ground cover solutions. Also on tap for tomorrow is a new sprinkler line in a back yard planter. I hope to get that done in one day but it will be a reach to do so. In the meantime I'll fold clothes and call it an early night. In recognition of today, I'm listening to a little known march, written for one of my favorite presidents. Perhaps halogencycle can appreciate this. Current Mood: blahCurrent Music: United States Marine Band - Thomas Jefferson March |

Today's gotta be better than yesterday So, let's see...
Yesterday ...
... I found out that a close friend is probably moving away ... I had to write my performance review self-assessment ... I lost the previously planned company for this week's long drive ... I found out that one of the two professors I'd really wanted to talk with at UCB died in April. (I had met him briefly before, and by all accounts he was a wonderful guy, which fit with my one experience)
there's probably more, but here's to non-shitty days. =) |

Nessus Feed Changes this probably doesn't even remotely interest anyone here... but if you're a security weenie, what do you think of the latest upcoming changes to nessus feeds?
there are a lot of open source projects that make the leap to commercial products (snort / sourcefire comes to mind) in a good way... but it kinda chaps my ass to see work I've contributed toward an open source project be commercialized.
it's one thing to provide a value-add service to those willing to pay for it (i.e., turn it into an enterprise level platform with all kinds of high end features that the average joe couldn't care less about) vs. turning a product into cripple-ware unless you fork over some dough.
I really don't mind what happened with sourcefire. they basically took the open source package and added value on top of it. not getting the same warm fuzzies with nessus though. they've taken the basic package and crippled it unless you open up your wallet.
in any case -- fuck 'em. I won't be contributing anything more directly. |

More foot trouble Last week the moving crew dropped my desk on the great toe on my right foot. It was and remains sore. But now the ache has shifted to the side. Do I feel a gout attack coming on? Vista Is A Joke!!! I am trying to copy a folder full of files buried down inside C:\Users\Me\Projects to the root level of my C: drive. I get an error message that says "You need permission to perform this action". The only buttons available are "Try Again" and "Cancel". "Try Again" just gives me the same error message, ad infinitum. And this is after I've disabled User Account Control, and set permissions to "Full Control" for the root level of C:.
Who came up with this garbage??? Who tested it??? Who allowed it to go to production???
Is there any way to turn off all access control to all parts of my own drive in Vista? (I mean, I need permission to copy files around my own hard drive??? Sheesh.) |

Apartment Hunt, Personal Helper, NAMT submission I've started the process of putting the house onto the market. It will cost me over $10K just to get it ready for sale--floors redone, painting, pressure washing, staging (fake furniture! yea!) But hopefully that bit of expense will pay back in spades.
Meanwhile, we've begun the search for a 2 bedroom apartment. We're aiming for Hayes Valley (Aaron and Chris's place is there), but so far nothing has turned up. We're also scouring Duboce Triangle (to be Josh's neighbors?), but again, nothing yet. I've got my new assistant Ceci looking at it all, but we're also checking out other neighborhoods. Maybe USF? Too far from muni, I think. Maybe Eureka Valley (again)?
In other news, casting is now complete for the extension of Insignificant Others at PIER 39 through January 2009. Now the process of rehearsals, photo sessions, and cast dynamics starts anew! Oy vey. Well, it IS what I signed up for.
I've been on pins and needles, and feeling like a high school senior, waiting for word from the National Alliance for Musical Theatre, which holds its new musicals festival every fall for all the "suits" in the business. With 300 submissions and only 8 awardees, the odds of getting selected are a long. Last year, both Homeland and ISO were dinger in early June, but we were invited specifically to make some changes to Homeland and to reapply. The announcements are set for July 12, and I haven't heard anything yet. So no news is good news. I have developed a love/hate relationship with the postal worker who delivers our mail... I keep wondering if somehow they lost my application (hard to lose a 10 lb box of scripts though) or if the rejection letter was sent but somehow lost in the mail. Crazy stuff like that. Well, here's hoping. |

We don't need no stinkin' badges Tall, clean-cut, linebacker-built Bill Jakob had all the essential qualities of a good police officer - well, except for one - and the police department in Gerald, Mo., was glad to have him and his unmarked 2003 Ford Crown Victoria on the force. He just showed up one day, claiming to have been reassigned from a regional drug task force, and helped engineer a series of successful drug raids that led to perhaps a dozen arrests. He was admired by just about everybody for his prudent behavior and razor-sharp knowledge of the law, except a few targets who found it odd when he claimed that, as a federal agent, he didn't need warrants to go looking in their houses. As one arrestee told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, "You can watch the DEA on TV and see that they need a search warrant." Of course, as you might have guessed, it turned out Jakob wasn't a police officer at all but an ex-trucker from a nearby town with a thing for the police, and now many of the people he arrested are suing Gerald, Mo., for civil-rights violations, claiming up to $11 million in damages. To which the embarrassed Mayor Otis Schulte responds, "Come on, let's get real. The whole assessed valuation of the town is something like $13 million. Current Mood: amused |

Depressing Saturday I'm in Oakland, having a beer. I deserve one. I presided at a will execution this morning. It is kinda pro-forma but one cannot watch a will being executed without contemplating what it is and what it anticipates. That was followed by a dash across the Bay to get to a memorial service. I'll write more about the memorial service later. Suffice it to say that I've had enough contemplation of death for one day. I am debating what to do tonight. I flew from Orange County to San Francisco. Unlike LAX to OAK flights, flying from SNA to SFO requires a Saturday night stay for the best fare. It is cheaper for me to spend the night in The City than to return home. I learned today that tonight and tomorrow are "Pride Days" in San Francisco. No doubt The City will be packed. I don't know if I want that hassle. I'm staying at a Holiday Inn down by the airport and I may just hang there. If you're an SFO / Bay Area reader, give me a call or drop me a TXT.
